OMS-ANMCS message for World Patient Safety Day
Today is World Patient Safety Day. Patient safety is a serious global public health concern. As such, the world has come together for the first time to recognize patient safety as a key health priority after the day was established at the recent World Health Assembly in May 2019.
No one should be harmed in health care. And yet, every day, thousands of patients suffer avoidable harm while receiving care. 2.6 million patients die due to patient safety issues every year in low- and middle-income countries. That is five people die every minute due to errors while receiving healthcare. Most of these deaths are avoidable.
In Romania, comprehensive patients’ safety norms, standards and procedures are already in place and, as you know, are mandatory to be observed by all health professionals. Furthermore, beyond rules and regulations, we need to work together to create an organizational culture of safety and improving the quality of care for all patients. Every one of you has the ability and the opportunity to be involved in reducing medical errors in their place of work and to save more lives.
Work with the patient to create an open and transparent patient safety culture. Encourage blame-free reporting and learning from errors. Working together, we can have extraordinary results for our patients!
